Restoring Nature’s Guardians: Mangrove Rehabilitation in Sitio Ugnisan

Mangrove Outplanting in Sitio Ugnisan last June 6-7

As part of the GForest Project initiatives, Culion Foundation, Inc. (CFI) and the Baldat Fishermen and Farmers Association (BAFFA) assisted the Ugnisan Fisherfolk and Farmers’ Association (UFFA) in rehabilitating over 2 hectares of degraded mangrove forests in Sitio Ugnisan, Barangay Luac.

The deforested mangrove areas were previously a source of lumber for local charcoal makers. However, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has dismantled the charcoal furnace, and the area remains off-limits.

Additionally, CFI, BAFFA, UFFA, and the Culion Local Government Units (LGUs) are collaborating to restore the mangroves, as UFFA has fenced off the area to protect it from Gleaners (crab collectors) and to ensure a speedy recovery.

UFFA, a People’s Organization (PO) formed by CFI and BAFFA in May 2024, is dedicated to implementing the GForest’s community-based mangrove rehabilitation projects.
