Culion Foundation’s Active Case Finding for TB in CALABARZON: A Success in Prioritizing Vulnerable Groups

In the first quarter of 2022, the Culion Foundation, in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and the Department of Health (DOH), launched an active case finding initiative for tuberculosis (TB) in the CALABARZON region. With a strong focus on vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, people living with HIV (PLHIV), individuals with immunocompromised conditions, and those exhibiting symptoms, the program aimed to identify and provide timely care to TB patients, contributing significantly to the region’s public health efforts.

Identifying the high-risk groups and proactively addressing their health needs were the core objectives of the Culion Foundation’s active case finding initiative. Recognizing that the aforementioned individuals were at greater risk of contracting TB and experiencing severe consequences, the program prioritized them for screening.

Throughout the active case finding campaign, a remarkable total of 4,329 patients were screened across the region. This extensive screening process helped identify undiagnosed TB cases, providing patients with an opportunity to receive appropriate treatment and care at an early stage of the disease. This, in turn, mitigated the risk of transmission and improved the overall health outcomes of the affected communities.

The partnership between the Culion Foundation, PBSP, and DOH was a crucial aspect of the initiative’s success. The collective efforts of these organizations allowed for the efficient mobilization of resources, manpower, and expertise in implementing the active case finding program. Additionally, the collaboration facilitated the coordination of activities, ensuring that each partner’s strengths were maximized to achieve the best possible outcomes. As the battle against TB continues, the dedication and commitment shown by these organizations serve as an inspiring model for future public health interventions.
